Sandy Springs incorporated as its own city in December 2005 — at the time, one of the largest cities ever to incorporate in the U.S. — after decades as an unincorporated part of Fulton County. City Springs, a downtown district built on a former shopping center site and opened in 2018, gave the city a proper walkable civic core — city hall, performing arts space, and residential/retail — that it hadn't had before. The Chattahoochee River forms Sandy Springs' western boundary, separating it from Cobb County.
